Lead

Become a Project Leader

  1. Are you a current HOBA volunteer?
  2. Have you volunteered for at least 3 HOBA projects?
  3. Do you want to lead others in volunteering?
  4. Can you commit to leading 4 projects a year with HOBA?

If you answered yes to all these questions, read on!

The Project Leader (PL)

Project Leaders (PLs) are the foundation of the HOBA community. They are the link between HOBA, our partner agencies and our volunteers. PLs lead each of the 120+ community calendar projects every month. PLs are HOBA volunteers who are ready to take the next step in volunteering. PLs represent HOBA in the community and are committed and enthusiastic about volunteering with HOBA.

PLs are vital to the success of each HOBA volunteer project. We are fortunate to have an outstanding PL team representing HOBA. The PL team is always growing and we encourage you to join us!

Getting Started:

  1. Attend 3 projects from our online Project Calendar
  2. Complete the Online Project Leader Training
  3. Co-lead a project alongside an experienced PL Mentor. A HOBA staff member will pair you with a PL Mentor.
  4. Active PLs can find projects to lead by:
    • Searching through the Project Calendar for projects without leaders, which will show “Dew Gude” as the Project Leader
    • Receiving the E-weekly newsletter which highlights open projects. To make sure you are receiving these newsletters, fill out the sign up form on the home page
    • Contacting the HOBA staff member for their region to discuss possible projects to lead

PL Responsibilities:

  1. One week prior to the project, contact the agency to confirm project details (date, time, volunteer numbers and any special instructions)
  2. A week before the project, contact the registered volunteers to confirm that they will attend the project. NOTE: 20% of HOBA projects filled by volunteers who do not attend! Ask volunteers to remove themselves if they can’t attend so another volunteer can take their place!
  3. Arrive at least 15 minutes early to get familiar with the settings, meet the agency representative and greet the volunteers as they arrive.
  4. Print and bring the waiver form (project sign-in sheet) and nametags and ensure volunteers complete them. Collect any minor consent forms.
  5. At the beginning of the project, introduce yourself as the PL, share information about HOBA and ask the agency representative to briefly share information about the organization and the volunteer tasks for the day.
  6. Ensure that volunteers have a positive experience by checking in periodically and making sure everyone has a task.
  7. After the project please fax, mail, or email the completed waiver to the HOBA staff member for your region. NOTE: Don’t forget to update the attendance in the HandsOn Technology (HOT) database!
